Welcome to Hotel Existence
I’m Richard Audette, and Hotel Existence is my website. I’m based out of Toronto, Canada. I’m a husband, parent of two teens, and a computing generalist. I post about things I build (mostly small embedded computing or web projects), and a little bit about cybersecurity and work.
I came across the name Hotel Existence in a book called The Brooklyn Follies. I don’t remember much about the book itself, but this idea struck a chord - life is like a hotel: temporary, transient, and filled with a mix of people and experiences.
The earliest articles on this site were cobbled together from emails and my posts on other websites. Hotel Existence was brought online in 2014, running on a WordPress instance hosted on AWS EC2. In 2023, I decided to shift the site to Hugo on AWS S3 + Cloudfront to save a few dollars, avoid the overhead of running an Internet facing server, and speed up page loads. In 2025, I moved the site to Cloudflare Pages.
When the site was run on WordPress, I’d get comments from random people, which were always fun to read. The website doesn’t feature a comments section anymore, but if you have any questions or comments about anything on the site, I’d love to hear from you. Email is the best way to reach me, and I also can be found on Mastodon/Fediverse and LinkedIn.

A friend and former colleague of mine, Marcus Udokang, hosts and produces a podcast called The Inquisitive Analyst. Marcus interviews business analysts and project managers about their professional experience. I’ve appeared twice - check it out!
- First in 2021, where I spoke about my career experience in FinTech
- Second, in 2024, where our discussion was about how to maximize what you can get done with limited resources.
